IT Handover Checklist

Free checklist for business owners

If Your IT Person Disappeared Tomorrow, Could You Still Run Your Business?

Nobody plans for it. Your IT person takes another job, retires, gets sick, or just stops returning calls. When that happens, the hard part isn’t finding someone new. It’s that everything they knew walks out the door with them: who owns your domain, how to get into your email system, where the backups are, which login opens the firewall.

This free checklist is the list of what you’d need. Sit down with your IT person, whether that’s an employee, a contractor, a friend or us, and fill it in together. It takes an afternoon, and it’s worth doing even if you never change a thing.

What’s on the checklist

  • Your domain, DNS and website: who owns them and where they’re registered
  • Your email system’s administrator accounts, multi-factor recovery codes and password manager
  • Firewall, Wi-Fi, internet provider and phone system logins and account numbers
  • Servers, storage and backups, including the date anyone last proved a restore works
  • Business software, vendor support contacts, licenses and renewal dates
  • Computers, printers and leases
  • Security tools, who watches them, and who to call in an emergency
Cover of the IT Handover Checklist

You need this if…

  • How your IT is set up lives in one person’s head.
  • One person holds every password, and you couldn’t sign in to your own email administration.
  • Nobody can tell you when a backup was last test-restored.
  • Your domain or internet account is registered to someone’s personal email address.

The checklist also explains how to store the finished list safely (write down where things are and who has them, not the passwords themselves) and how we handle administrator access for our own clients.
