The hidden costs nobody mentions
- Egress fees. Cloud providers charge to move data out. If your business produces large files, this can sting.
- Per-seat licensing. Adding a contractor for two weeks costs a full month of licensing.
- Training. Cloud apps work differently. Real productivity costs of a 25-person team learning new workflows aren’t zero.
- Vendor lock-in. Moving from one cloud provider to another costs more than the original migration in most cases.
- Security tooling. The default security in any cloud platform is rarely sufficient for professional services. Add-on tooling adds cost.
Three Houston firm types that win in the cloud
1. The remote / hybrid firm. If your team works from anywhere — client sites, home offices, hotels — cloud is dramatically better than VPN-into-the-office. Houston firms with multi-city teams (e.g., Houston + Dallas) almost always benefit.

One that often doesn’t
The Houston firm that often shouldn’t rush to cloud: a small (10-15 person) practice with stable headcount, recent hardware, all employees in one office, low data volume, and one critical line-of-business application that’s not cloud-friendly. The on-premise cost is genuinely lower for them, and the cloud migration would buy flexibility they don’t need.

The right question isn’t "cloud or on-premise?" It’s: what does your business need to do in three years, and which model gets you there cheaper and with less risk?
