If a Windows Update goes bad, can you recover easily from it? What if it’s a local disaster? If there is a flood or fire, can you recover from it? How long does it take to recover? How long would you like it to take to recover?

Those are questions you need to ask yourself.

As much as I’d like to say we practice what we preach here at Aspendora, unfortunately that’s not always the case.

Our recommendation is that you have full offsite recovery capability. That’s not always financially feasible though. In our case, it isn’t. We have offsite file backup and the ability to recover from a hardware or update. However, if we have a fire or flood, our recovery time is much longer than I would like. Our recovery process would include reloading our server operating system, programs, and then finally the data. This process could take a few days.

On the other hand, a full disaster recovery process would include having an image-based backup offsite with the ability to have a backup unit sent via overnight to us in case our office is destroyed.

Or, even better, a business continuity solution would include the ability to virtualize your server in the cloud and be back up and operational within an hour.

There are also other ways to backup and safeguard your data. Integrating some type of cloud solutions could minimize your risk. For some businesses, simply moving your email to a cloud based solution helps your restore process tremendously. For other businesses, moving to a cloud based email is not an option, but even for them, a cloud based archive may be a solution. Our email is hosted locally on our server, but it is archived in a cloud based solution. If we have to rebuild our server, we can restore our email using our cloud based archive. Additionally, if our server is down, we can send and receive email using our archive solution.
