The US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana and the Internal Revenue Service have both cautioned taxpayers of the opportunity for criminals to steal stimulus payments through various means.

I have already received a phone call claiming to be from the IRS and wanting to talk to me about my stimulus check. I have seen emails as well from various nefarious people trying to get me to give them my information.

Verify. Verify. Verify.

If you receive an email and you aren’t sure, ask someone to help you determine. Check to make sure the domain name (the letters after the @ sign match up to the organization). When you click reply, make sure the domain name still matches up. Do not send bank account information through email. Just don’t. Do not send credit card information through email.
