How many times have you seen one of your friends post “I’ve lost all my contacts again, send me your number”?
With the synchronization capability of the iPhone, there is no reason to lose your contacts anymore. You can sync all of your contacts to a free Gmail account and never worry about losing contacts again.
Note: the same concept can be applied to an Android based phone.
The first step is to go to Settings:
Then go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars:
As you can see, I have several accounts already set up, but your list will more than likely be empty, so you will touch Add Account:
For this, you select Microsoft Exchange, NOT Gmail. It’s important that you select Microsoft Exchange.
You will now need to fill in the details of your Gmail account. This would be your @gmail.com account for the email, the domain is m.google.com, your username is your email address, and your password is the password to your account. You can enter a description if you want.
In my case, my email account is firstname.lastname@example.org. Once you touch Next, you will have the opportunity to enter the server. Enter m.google.com here.
After touching next again, you will now have the option to select what items you want synced. Since the purpose of this is to create a backup of your contacts, it’s important that you select them:
You can also sync your calendar and your mail.
One last step is to go to Settings then Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then to scroll down to Contacts and make sure the Default Account is the recently added account. If not, touch Default Account and Select your account from the list.
One other advantage is that you can enter contacts directly into the Gmail website and they will be synced to your phone.
